Will you be joining our procession this year?

All floats intending to join our procession must be applied for in advance of the event. The deadline for float applications is May 20th, 2024. Please note that any applications submitted after this date will not be considered. So, if you're eager to have a float in the procession, be sure to submit your application nice and early.


There's no fee for having a float in the procession, but we do ask that you adhere to our float terms and conditions, which can be found below the application form on this page. Please review them carefully before applying. We look forward to seeing your creative floats!

This years theme is 'TV and Toons!'

This year's theme is all about "TV and Toons," and it's up to you to interpret it in the most fun and imaginative way possible! When it comes to TV, think of your favorite TV shows or beloved TV personalities. And as for "Toons," let your imagination run wild with anything related to cartoons - from classic cartoon shows to animated films featuring your favorite characters. The possibilities are endless, so get creative and have a blast!

Float/Procession - Important Information

We are planning another great event, with the support of our local schools, nurseries/preschools, clubs, businesses, trades and organisations; we are hoping to have more entries than ever in the parade as last years was a great success!

So, everyone is clear on how the judges mark the floats you will find the judging criteria has been added to the conditions of entry.

You will need to register your float on arrival, so please read the information very carefully.

Please note due to safety regulations no vehicles other than actual floats will be allowed in the Audley Avenue area where the floats will be congregating, roads will be blocked off.

Drop offs can be made at the car park for Shuker field off The Broadway –postcode ref TF10 7NS

SOME STREETS WILL BE CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC - Please allow adequate time as on Carnival day it gets very busy! Please observe the road closure signs and don’t enter an area which is closed, being restricted for floats.

ALL FLOATS / VEHICLES FOR THE PROCESSION SHOULD ONLY ENTER AUDLEY AVENUE FROM THE ALDI AND LIDL END OF TOWN - THE BOLLARDS WILL HAVE BEEN LOWERED. - Floats should arrive no earlier than 10.30AM and no later than 11.30AM

ALL PARTICIPANTS INTITIALLY WILL BE DIRECTED TO A SAFE AREA AWAY FROM MOVING VEHICLE (Burton Borough car park) - ONLY BEING ALLOWED TO RENDEVOUZ WITH THEIR FLOATS AFTER BEING DIRECTED BY THE MARSHALLS.

Every float will be issued with a minimum of 2 sealed collecting buckets – issued to the Float representative by a designated member(s) of the committee identified by an official carnival ID lanyard.

These buckets will be collected at the end of the parade by a designated member(s) of the committee identified by an official carnival ID lanyard.

Float/Procession - Terms and Conditions

Please note: Only floats will be admitted into the Audley Avenue area – NO PRIVATE CARS ALLOWED

Classes

• Class 1  - Trade and business

• Class 2 - Schools and Youth Organisations

• Class 3 - Nursery/Preschool groups

• Class 4 Organisations - Sports & Social clubs

• Class 5 Children - walking floats/mini vehicle (under 2.5m long) / individual fancy dress

• Class 6 Adult – walking floats/mini vehicle (under 2.5m long) / individual fancy dress


1. Floats Classes 1, 2, 3 & 4 (vehicle entries) should assemble in the Audley Avenue area, Newport, not before 10.30am and no later than 11.30am.

a. On arrival a representative from the vehicle entry must report to the Carnival Committee to register their entry. The float representative must pick up their Carnival collecting buckets (minimum of two) for the

On- route street collection

i. Closing time for entries is 11.30am - any float not registered will not be judged and not be eligible to receive a 1st, 2nd or 3rd award. Although you will be able to join the parade.

ii. Judging this year will NOT take place prior to departure but on route again.

2. Floats Classes 5 and 6 (walking entries) should assemble no earlier than 11.00 am and no later than 11.40am.

a. On arrival a representative from the vehicle entry must report to the Carnival Committee to register their entry. The float representative must pick up their Carnival collecting buckets (minimum of two) for the On- route street collection from members of the committee.

Closing time for entries is 11.30am - any float not registered will not be judged and not be eligible to receive a 1st, 2nd or 3rd award. Although you will be able to join the parade.

Judging will be on the processional route.

3. Every entrant, in every class, will be marked out of 10 for each of the following criteria:

a. Overall first impression and impact

b. Effort gone into decorating float or props used in a walking float

c. Effort gone into costumes

d. How well is the theme represented?

e. Entertainment value onroute - acting, enthusiasm etc.

4. Entries will be judged for 1st, 2nd and 3rd position.


5. Prize giving for all classes will be at 1.30pm approximately from the stage in the High Street - Judges decision will be final.

6. A trophy will be awarded for first place in each class. A representative of the winning group will be asked to sign for the trophy. This may be held for 1 year but must be returned to the Newport Carnival committee when requested.

7. Procession will move off at 12.00pm. All floats walking, or vehicle be given a position to join the procession.

8. Please note that legally street collections can only be made for Newport Carnival funds as the authorised organisation for the day in the official collection tins. These should be returned to the Carnival committee representative at the end of the procession.
You cannot have your own collection buckets, if this is found your float will be disqualified.

9. Lower Bar - will be closed for the purpose of disembarking of children to allow them to make their way into the high street for the awarding of prizes at 1.30pm approx

10. The Carnival floats will finish at Lowe Bar, where an area will be assigned for dismantling of the float’s decoration- please use the skips provided.

11. Each float MUST have designated adults who remain with the lorries to dismantle the float.

Please be aware of moving vehicles at all times, especially when walking beside floats in the procession. Long vehicles will need space when turning and at road junctions.

Each float leader is wholly responsible for the Health and Safety and Insurance cover of people involved with it.

ONLY ADULTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE DIRECT SUPERVISION OF CHILDREN ON A FLOAT SHOULD ACCOMPANY THE FLOAT. PARENTS SHOULD NOT WALK ALONGSIDE OR BEHIND THE FLOAT UNLESS DRESSED TO BE PART OF THE PARADE. PEOPLE COLLECTING FOR THE CARNIVAL MUST BE DRESSED TO THE THEME ALSO (this identifies bona fide collectors)

The carnival committee or volunteers working on their behalf on the day cannot be held responsible for any accidents or injury which may occur in connection with the procession; either at the procession start or whilst on the highways.

Please ensure that decorations are adequately fixed to your vehicle so as not to put you or others at risk of injury; Marshals may ask you to remove any items that are considered unsafe, refusal to do so may have your float removed from the procession.

Children must be kept under close supervision at all times. Burton Borough School carpark IS the waiting area for all float participants, NOT Audley Avenue.

It is each float entrant lead persons responsibility to ensure that children are supervised at all times

Marshals will be provided throughout the route. If you have any safety concerns, please speak to them.

Under no circumstances should any person/s be transported on a vehicle, other than in the cab, on the public highway between where the float is being decorated and the start of the carnival procession.  

The parade is only possible with the good will of the police and Marshalls, so we implore entrants to act responsibly if the Carnival parade is to continue. The parade organiser will disqualify any entry that arrives with people already on the float.  You must travel independently and only board the float at the Audley Avenue designated area.
